Within the EU, Germany is on top concerning investments into science and technology. For over 10 years, R&D investments exceeded 2,3 % of her GDP, with over 60 % of this budget spent by industry. About 600 German companies are involved in bioresearch and biobusiness, including 500 core biotech firms. Germany commands the largest pharmaceutical market within the EU, and is a EU leader in areas such as chemistry, manufacturing, health and environmental research. Apart from defining her own public research activities, her programs are deeply rooted within EU research initiatives. Over 100 state universities and universities of applied sciences, more than 30 national and state research centers, and a considerable number of Max-Planck- and Fraunhofer institutes contribute to a scientific output of 6 % of the world's scientific literature, and 8 % of the global patent applications. Bioresearch in regional clusters ("BioRegions") has become a particular success story in this country. Bio-related trade fairs such as Biotechnica, Analytica or Medica are among the leading events of biobusiness. Due to the federalistic structure of Germany, with her 16 member states who exert control over universities, research centers and research budgets, analysis of ongoing bioresearch and biobusiness in Germany is complex and timeconsuming.
