Within the EU, France is second only to Germany concerning investments into science and technology. For over 10 years, R&D investments exceeded 2 % of her GDP, with over 40 % of this budget spent by industry. There are more than 500 French companies involved in bioresearch and biobusiness, including some 400 dedicated small and medium biocompanies. Nationwide research organizations such as the CNRS, CEA, INRA and INSA, about 50 national universities and private bioresearch institutions such as the Institut Pasteur contribute to a scientific output of more than 5 % of the world's scientific literature, and 3 % of the global patent applications. Over the past 10 years, France has initiated a number of successful bio-clusters through public-private partnerships ("biopoles"). She also has a considerable influence on R&D programs supported by the EU. Further strong research committments exist to French-speaking countries such as Canada, Vietnam or Tunesia, and there are many joint R&D programs with emerging powers such as China, Brazil or Russia. France commands the second largest pharmaceutical market within the EU, behind Germany, and is a leader in areas such as health and preventive medicine, agroindustrial research, and the development of food and cosmetics. Analysis of and access to bio-related developments in France may be hampered, however, as a language barrier prevails. Bio4Business is bridging this gap by providing an up-to-date window to biotechnology R&D and biobusiness in France, geared to the needs of her partners within privileged partnerships.
