China is an emerging power in R&D. Already, over 1.5 % of its GDP is devoted to science and technology, which is shared among the various institutes of the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) and Research Institutions under the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), notably the universities. Some universities such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, Jiao Tong University and Fudan University are striving to become global players in science and education. Industrial R&D in biotechnology is still lagging behind Western nations but strong efforts are made to bridge this gap. Jiangsu Province with its capital Nanjing is among the most successful provinces of China. Its population of 75 million contributes 10 % of the national GDP and receives 25 % of all foreign investment to China. It hosts 119 universities and colleges. 1.7 % of the State budget is devoted to R&D. software, IC, solar photovoltaic, wind power generating facilities, LCD screens and engineering machinery are just some of the high-tech industries located in Jiangsu Province and contribute 27 % of total industrial output. Biopharmaceuticals, industrial biotechnology and chemistry are just some of the priority areas. Jiangsu has established governmental and nongovernmental linkages with more than 70 countries and regions for cooperation in science and technology. Analysis of and access to developments of biotechnology in China may be hampered, however, as language and cultural barriers prevail. Bio4Business is bridging this gap by providing an up-to-date window to biotechnology R&D and biobusiness in China, geared to the needs of her partners, within privileged partnerships.
